Ariovistus, Sr. wrote from July 1861 to July 1863 concerning relief for troops following 2nd Manassas, Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. He received a letter from Colonel John W. Geary of the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment concerning efforts to raise 2 companies for the 28th. Ariovistus Pardee, Jr., wrote 41 letters from July 1861 to October 1862 on his service with the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment and 27 letters from October 1862 to June 1864 relating to his command of the 147th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. Subjects include techniques for raising troops, securing promotion, and dealing with officers such as General John W. Geary and General Hector Tyndale. Calvin Pardee wrote 9 letters from April-July 1861 on the 1st Pennsylvania and 3 on the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiments. Calvin Pardee (1841-1923) was the son of anthracite coal entrepreneur, Ariovistus ("Ario") Pardee, Jr. Calvin graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1860 and was a member of Theta Delta Chi Fraternity. After graduating, he went to work for the Glendon Iron Company (Easton, PA), of which his father was primary owner. John W. Geary was a lawyer, politician and Union general in the Civil War (1861-1865). He was born in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania on 30 December 1819. He was concerned about relief for the federal troops during the Civil War and particularly for the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment.
